The U.K. has long been the top study abroad destination, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why – for English-speaking students going abroad, it’s one of the places where you don’t have to be studying a foreign language to get by. Learning a language is hard, right? So if you can get away with doing less work and still studying overseas, all the better! The U.K. is one of the most popular destinations for first-time vacationers, so it’s not surprising that it would also be popular with students.

In all seriousness, the United Kingdom offers some of the top study abroad opportunities, whether you’re talking about the bustling capital of London, Scotland’s historic capital city of Edinburgh, or any number of smaller cities and towns throughout England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. And if you’re studying theatre, literature, or history, the U.K. is a great place to be. Oh, and about the language thing – don’t assume your English will be like their English. There are differences, albeit sometimes subtle ones, that can make for some pretty entertaining exchanges.

Canada

From the Victorian architecture in Vancouver to the Parisian-style streets of Montreal, Canada offers diversity like no other. Toronto has been described as “New York, run by the Swiss” whilst Victoria in British Columbia is one of the most British cities in North America. Its size helps, at 10 million square kilometres it has something (and somewhere) for anyone wanting to study abroad. Impossible to dislike, Canada has a slice of home for everyone, making it the perfect place to study, whilst still having its own strong identity. Just make sure you pack your winter clothes, as it currently boasts the title of the world’s coldest country!

Canadian universities and institutions are amongst the best in the world and offer the choice to learn in either of the official languages (English and French). The likes of Acadia University, College Militaire Royale and Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal are highly regarded institutions and Canadian degrees are internationally recognised.

Australia

The country down under offers itself as a great study abroad destination with almost 50 universities to pick between. A friendly environment and comfortable climate combined with its world-class universities and favourable employment prospects makes this a highly desirable place to study, especially for students who speak English. Popular amongst Asian students due to the geographical proximity, Australia also attracts students from Europe and North & South America who want to get a bit further away from home. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter where you come from though, as the friendly country is accommodating to all. Melbourne, Sydney and Perth are the most popular places to study in the country, although there are plenty of other cities and towns to choose from.

Going back to the concept of studying in a place that doesn’t require English speakers to get too far outside their language comfort zone, we have another English-speaking country on the list – Australia. And again, as with the United Kingdom, although Australian English really does have its own individual language qualities, it’s certainly easier to not have to worry about an entirely different language altogether.

Sydney and Melbourne are two of the more popular cities in which to study in Australia, but Australia’s a big country. Even though the huge central region isn’t anyplace you’re going to find a university, the western city of Perth is another option if you want to get beyond where most students go. If you’re studying marine biology, you can’t do much better than to be near the Great Barrier Reef, but students of just about any subject can find lots to enjoy in Australia.

Singapore

The small country of Singapore certainly packs a punch when it comes to its British-based education system. Despite only having eight universities, Singapore has been regularly regarded as a leader in international education and as the country continues to develop, it looks as if Singapore’s position amongst the other global players will continue to prosper. Singapore’s tuition grant, available to graduates who have been offered a place on a course, makes it easier to self-fund study in the country. It is required for students to work for a Singapore-registered company for at least three years after completing a degree in order to ensure the country benefits from the skills of those it educates. It is schemes such as this one that has seen Singapore propel itself to the tops of the leader boards worldwide over the past few years.

USA

Perhaps one of the most diverse countries on the planet, many claim that the United States of America has it all; natural wonders, cultural distinction, busy cities and relaxing natural environments. The fifty states that make up America are all incredibly different, so giving only a few reasons to justify the USA’s position on this list is incredibly difficult. The southern states are renowned for their great food and music scenes, whilst the east/west coast rivalry shows just how proud the locals are of their neighbourhoods. America is a great place to study, and would feature higher on our list if it wasn’t for the high cost of living and course fees. That being said, by studying in America, you are enhancing your academic career within one of the best education systems in the world and increasing your job prospects by working with some of the top professionals. San Francisco, Boston and New York are all popular destinations, but with over 2,600 to choose between, the possibilities really are endless.

Germany

Last, but by no means least, is Germany. We included Germany in our list of best study abroad locations because of its contrasting nature. Many destinations are suited to students who prefer to dance the night away, whilst others are better for those who spend their time in the coffee shops and museums. Germany caters effortlessly for both. Berlin offers an edgy and vibrant student lifestyle whilst Munich provides a more traditional take on the country with its unique Bavarian culture. Munich is also the host city for Oktoberfest, one of the world’s great parties. The German government also provide subsidies for domestic and international students, similar to the Netherlands, making it an affordable option too. Germany is a great place for those who love to get outdoors too, even within the cities there are plenty of short walks and streets to explore, but if you can manage to get away from the hustle and bustle, you can find yourself very quickly on a ski-slope or hiking through magnificent landscapes.

A country covered in history, Germany rounds off our list of the best places to study abroad. Get more information about studying in Germany in our guide to study in Europe.
